Security lighting in Loughton: see what’s happening in your garden after dark

A customer recently called us because his old outside lights were tripping the circuit. The British weather had taken its toll on the fittings and sensors. He wanted to see the dog when he let it out at night and spot any foxes approaching the chickens at the end of his garden. With 33 years in the electrical trade, I knew the conversation needed to cover how he used the space as well as replacing the lights.

We’re an NICEIC Approved Contractor, and we plan lighting around what matters to you. That might be seeing the back gate, lighting your route to the shed or having a clearer view when movement triggers a sensor.

At Tack Electrical, we install security lighting across Loughton, Buckhurst Hill, Woodford, South Woodford, Chingford and Chigwell, helping homeowners, landlords and businesses make outdoor spaces easier to use after dark.

One garden, three ways to use the lights

On that recent job, we upgraded the customer’s lighting to floodlights and provided a switching arrangement with three options:

  • Sensor mode: the lights respond to detected movement.
  • Off: he can enjoy candles or softer garden lighting.
  • On: he can keep the area lit while entertaining.

We worked with his existing circuit, giving him control over how the lighting operated.

That’s why I ask questions before choosing a fitting. You might want bright light when the dog goes outside, but you probably don’t want the same lighting running throughout a quiet evening on the patio.

Let’s work out what you want to see

We start with a free quotation visit. We walk around with you, look at the existing installation and discuss where lighting would be useful.

We consider the number and position of fittings, sensor coverage, switching and the route for any wiring. We also discuss where the light will fall, so it serves your space without unnecessarily shining towards neighbouring windows.

If you want to highlight a tree or create softer lighting elsewhere, tell us. We can discuss those ideas alongside your security lighting rather than assuming floodlights are the answer to everything.

You’ll have the information you need to choose, followed by a written quotation for the work we discussed.

Outside lighting needs careful installation

It’s easy to think this is just putting a light on the end of a wire. But outdoor fittings face rain, damp and changing weather, and the details of installation matter.

We select fittings suitable for their position and exposure. We use appropriate cable entries and glands, follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and seal wall penetrations where required.

We preserve any drainage arrangements the fitting needs. Simply adding sealant everywhere isn’t a substitute for installing the enclosure correctly.

We use established materials that have proved dependable in our work. The aim is a complete installation suited to its surroundings, with care given to the connections you won’t see afterwards.

What if the existing lights are tripping?

If your current lighting trips the circuit, tell us when you enquire.

Replacing a fitting might be part of the solution, but we first need to establish whether the problem lies with the fitting, sensor, cable or another part of the installation. We explain any investigation or remedial work needed rather than assuming new lights alone will resolve it.

Once the agreed installation is complete, we inspect and test our work before putting it into service.

Frequently asked questions

How much does security lighting cost?

Our guide price is £145, subject to a free quotation visit. We confirm the complete price after assessing the fittings, wiring, access and controls you need.

Can I switch between sensor operation and keeping the lights on?

Yes, we can discuss controls that provide sensor operation, an off setting and a continuous-on option. We check which arrangement suits your chosen fittings and existing wiring before quoting.

Will a sensor detect foxes or my dog?

A movement sensor may respond to animals, depending on its type, positioning and settings. We discuss what you want it to detect and explain that it cannot reliably distinguish an animal from an intruder.

Can you replace outside lights that keep tripping?

Yes, we can assess the existing lighting and investigate what is causing the tripping. We explain whether replacing fittings will resolve the problem or whether wiring or other repairs are needed.

How long will installation take?

We estimate the time after seeing the installation and agreeing the work. Replacing one accessible fitting differs from installing several lights with new cables and controls.

Can you help with decorative garden lighting too?

Yes, we can discuss softer lighting and features such as illuminating a tree alongside your security lighting. We’ll help you plan controls so you can use different lighting for different occasions.
